Definition
CBP Form 5106, officially titled the "Importer ID Input Record," is the form used to register a business entity or individual as an importer of record with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It establishes your importer identity in CBP's system and must be filed before your first formal customs entry can be processed.
Why It Matters for Importers
You cannot import goods into the United States without being registered in CBP's system. The 5106 form is how CBP creates your importer account using your Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number. Without a completed 5106 on file, your customs broker cannot submit an entry on your behalf.
First-time importers frequently discover this requirement at the worst possible time — when cargo has already arrived and is waiting at the port. Filing the 5106 in advance, ideally weeks before your first shipment, prevents this delay.
Key Details
- When to file: Before your first formal customs entry. Your customs broker typically files this on your behalf.
- Information required: Business name, address, EIN or SSN, business type, and the names of company officers or owners.
- One-time filing: The 5106 only needs to be filed once unless your business information changes (new address, new officers, etc.).
- Updates required: Any changes to the information on the 5106 must be reported to CBP. Outdated information can delay entries.
