Definition

The entry summary, filed on CBP Form 7501, is the detailed customs filing that accompanies every formal import entry. It contains the complete record of what was imported, including Harmonized Tariff Schedule codes, declared values, duty calculations, country of origin, and all applicable fees. The entry summary must be filed with duty payment within 10 working days of goods being released from CBP custody.

Why It Matters for Importers

The entry summary is where the money changes hands. It is the document CBP uses to calculate and collect your duties, merchandise processing fees, and harbor maintenance fees. Every line item on the 7501 — classification, value, quantity, country of origin — directly affects what you pay.

Errors on the entry summary can result in overpaid or underpaid duties. If you underpay, CBP will assess additional duties plus interest during liquidation. If you overpay, you may be entitled to a refund — but only if you catch the error and file a protest or post-entry amendment within the allowed timeframe.
